Steps

Brick

Group steps into a named folder on the canvas so big chatbots stay easy to read.

What it does#

A Brick is a folder for steps. It shows on the canvas as one card with a name, a color, and how many steps and exits it has. Double-click it to work on the steps inside.

A brick only organizes the canvas. Your bot runs exactly the same, step by step: customers never see bricks.

Use bricks to split a long chatbot into parts such as Welcome, Orders, Returns and Collect details.

The Brick step

Group steps into a brick#

  1. 1

    Select the steps

Hold ⌘ (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) and click each step you want to group. The toolbar shows how many steps are selected.

  2. 2

    Group them

Press ⌘G (Mac) or Ctrl+G (Windows), or right-click a selected step and choose Group into brick. You can also click Brick under Organize in the step list.

  3. 3

    Name it

Click the brick to open its settings. Type a Brick name, for example Returns, and pick a Color.

  4. 4

    Check its connections

The settings list the Steps in this brick, its Exits (connections that leave the brick) and how many connections come in. Your existing connections are kept.

Work inside a brick#

  1. 1

    Open it

Double-click the brick card, or click it and choose Open.

  2. 2

    Add or edit steps

Drag steps in from the step list and edit them as usual. Small Entry and Exit markers show where connections come from and go to outside the brick.

  3. 3

    Move steps in or out

Right-click a step and choose Move to brick or Move out of brick. You can also drag a step from the main flow onto a brick card.

  4. 4

    Go back

Click Main flow at the top of the canvas, or press Esc.

Example#

A clinic's chatbot has 40 steps. The owner groups them into four bricks: Welcome (start message and main menu), Book a visit (date, time and details), Prices and Talk to us. The canvas now shows four cards connected to each other. Customers chat exactly as before.

Ungroup or delete#

  • Ungroup (in the brick's settings, or ⌘⇧G / Ctrl+Shift+G with the brick selected) removes the folder and puts its steps back on the main flow, with their connections.
  • Delete brick and steps deletes the brick and every step inside it, with their connections. You're asked to confirm. To keep the steps, choose Ungroup instead.

Common mistakes#

  • Thinking a brick changes the flow. It doesn't. To send customers somewhere else, change connections or use a Jump.
  • "No connections leave this brick yet". Nothing inside the brick leads out of it. If the customer should continue after this part, connect its last step to a step outside.
  • "N steps need attention" on the card. A step inside isn't finished. Open the brick and fix the steps marked in red.
  • The Brick item is greyed out. You're inside a brick. Go back to the main flow to add one.
